Sacha Baron Cohen continues to court controversy across the globe in promoting his new film Bruno. Cohen as Bruno has been on overdrive in sending up the gay Austrian character with “gay poses” and dressing in “gay” military garb, as he did for the London premier. The promotion has certainly worked, whether people want to see the film more or less now will be put to the test when the film is released stateside next week.
I was a fan of the original Bruno character and I admired Cohen for showing UK audiences that homophobia was still alive and kicking. This new Bruno pushes even more buttons and I only hope that Cohen’s original message isn’t overshadowed by the ridiculous.
